About Tommie Hernández

Born and raised in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Tommie graduated from the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras with a degree in Architecture. She then combined her love for lines and structure with her love for fashion and moved to Manhattan, NY to study Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology where she graduated summa cum laude. During this time she worked with renowned Irish designer Daryl K at her studio in SoHo. Tommie returned to PR in 1999, and since then she has established her line of swimwear and clothing, inspired by the beautiful beaches of her sunny island.

She has presented her collections in numerous fashion shows, among them: the Puerto Rico High Fashion Week (for several seasons), the Panama Fashion Week (sharing the runway with more than a dozen of Latin America’s best designers), the Chicago Latino Fashion Week, and The Big Casting, in Orlando Florida.

Tommie has been the designer of the official swimsuits of many beauty pageants, including Miss Puerto Rico Universe, Miss World Puerto Rico, Miss Puerto Rico Teen and Miss Puerto Rico Petite, among others. Local and international celebrities have worn her designs like  former MTV’s TRL presenter Vanessa Minnillo, and America’s Next Top Model winner, Caridee English, TV presenters Rashel Diaz and Shanira Blanco, soap opera diva Ailin Mujica, among others.  Her work has been shown in local and international newspapers and magazines, among them: California Apparel News, Waterwear Magazine, The Swim Journal, Ocean Drive PR, Imagen, EGO, Belleza y Salud, and Buena Vida Swimsuit Issue just to name a few.

For five years, she has taught at the University of Puerto Rico, and in after school programs, where she has the challenge of helping new talents in the fashion design business, and young girls that are starting to develop an interest in fashion. Hernández identifies with these girls since she started sewing when she was eight years old.  Her biggest satisfaction is transmitting the love she has for design as an expression of art. Hernandez is currently completing an MBA, with specialization in marketing at the Pontificial Catholic University.  Tommie sells her lines of teen and adult clothing (Tommie B. Collection and Tommita), in exclusive boutiques in Puerto Rico, and custom makes swimsuits and clothing for her exclusive clientele in her boutique-atelier located in her hometown of Mayagüez.
